What is a Punch List in Construction?

A punch list (also called a snagging list in the UK) is a document used in the construction industry to itemise work that does not conform to contract specifications and must be corrected by the contractor before final payment is made.

The punch list is typically created during the final inspection walkthrough of a construction project. The owner, architect, or general contractor walks the completed building and identifies any deficiencies — incomplete work, damaged items, or items that don't meet the contract requirements. Each item is “punched” (historically, a hole was punched in the paper beside the item to mark it as noted).

A thorough punch list is critical for:

  • Ensuring the contractor fulfils all contractual obligations before final payment
  • Documenting the condition of the property at handover
  • Protecting the owner from accepting incomplete or defective work
  • Providing a clear, actionable list for the contractor to complete
  • Creating an audit trail in case of disputes

While the free template below is a great starting point, digital punch list software like SnaggingTrack makes the process significantly faster and more accurate — with photo evidence, automated assignments, and instant PDF reports.

Punch List Template FAQ

Q: What items should be on a punch list?

A: A punch list should include any work that is incomplete, does not meet the contract specifications, or has been damaged during construction. This covers structural work, MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), interior finishes, exterior work, and site cleanup.

Q: Who creates the punch list?

A: The punch list is typically created by the owner, architect, or owner's representative during a final walkthrough inspection. The general contractor may also submit their own preliminary punch list. In residential construction, buyers often hire a professional inspector or snagging company.

Q: When is a punch list used?

A: A punch list is created at or near Substantial Completion — when the project is essentially complete but minor items remain. The contractor then has a set period (defined in the contract) to complete all punch list items before final payment is released.
